3-year-old fillies sprint in the Cicada at Aqueduct on Saturday
// By the NY Hot List Staff | Friday, March 19, 2021

A small field of five 3-year-old fillies will go the starting gate in the six-furlong $100,000 Cicada at Aqueduct on Saturday.

Trainer Tom Amoss will ship the 6-5 morning line favorite Save to the Big A from his base at Fair Grounds Race Course. The daughter of Violence is unbeaten after victories in a maiden special weight and then an allowance at the New Orleans track where she drifted out while winning in gate to wire fashion.

“In her last race she drifted out a bit,” Amoss said. “However, she has not given any indication either before or after the race that she has issues with that. A lot of it is both education and experience.”

Save will have to contend with Just Read It who comes from the Belmont Park barn of Ray Handal. After a six-length maiden score, the Constitution filly was sent to Turfway Park to try stakes company on the Tapeta surface which was not to her liking.

“When I talked to the jock [Emanuel Esquivel] after the last race, he said she was not extending,” explained Handal. “She was barely blowing when she came back, and she bounced back really well. She looked awesome when she shipped back up to New York.”

Here are the Hot List picks for the Cicada:

The $100,000 Cicada, Aqueduct, Saturday, Race 3. (5) Just Read It returns to Aqueduct where she won a maiden special weight by more than six-lengths. An experiment on the Tapeta at Turfway Park did not work out well and her poor performance makes her record look a but muddied up. Look for her to rebound in a big way on the dirt at morning line odds of 5-1. This is plenty of speed in the race to set-up her late run. (4) Save is unbeaten in two career starts for Tom Amoss and is the one to beat as she ships to New York from the Fair Grounds. (3) Salt Plage won her first two starts at Parx Racing for trainer Linda Rice and then ran third in a seven-furlong stake at Laurel. She is another filly that comes from off the pace. (2) Irish Constitution will venture back to race against open company after a more than four-length allowance victory versus NY-breds a week ago at Aqueduct. She prefers to be part of the early pace.
