A field of eight goes 10 furlongs in the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga

By NY Hot List staff | Friday, September 1, 2023

The Grade 1, $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Saturday drew a field of
eight horses in the older male dirt division that will race at the classic distance of 1¼
miles with a “Win and You’re In” spot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic going to the winner.
The 5-year-old Proxy is the elder statesman in the Jockey Club Gold Cup where the
other seven runners are 4-year-olds. Proxy comes to the JCGC with earnings over $2
million with three recent graded stakes victories including the Clark (G1).
“We knew from early on that he had a lot of talent and that’s why we were so ready to
give him all the time he needed and let him mature mentally and physically to where
he’s at now and it’s really paying off,” trainer Michael Stidham said.
Rattle N Roll, who is the other millionaire in the field, is in the best form of his life for
trainer Kenny McPeek with four recent, excellent graded stakes which include three
wins and a close second.

The $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) at Saratoga, Saturday, Race 11,
6:18 pm EDT.

(4) Rattle N Roll has been able to improve throughout his career where he has won
eight times. This year he ran five triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures where he won three
Grade 3 stakes at three different tracks. His win streak was stopped in the Stephen
Foster (G1) when his late rally fell a half-length short. The 10 furlong distance should
work to his favor. (6) Tyson ships down to Saratoga from Woodbine to make his first
start on a dirt surface after winning a pair of graded stakes on the artificial surface.
Trainer Josie Carroll has shipped to Saratoga to win big races in the past. (1) Proxy
won the Clark (G1) last year and won the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) and the Monmouth
Cup (G3) in his last three starts. (8) Bright Future bounced back from getting eased in
the Brooklyn (G2) to get an impressive victory in an allowance at Saratoga.
