Claiming Crown Showcase Day 2026: Undercard Qualifiers Betting Guide
Colonial Downs runs its second straight Claiming Crown Showcase Day on Saturday, and the seven undercard qualifiers are stacked with familiar faces. Concrete Glory, Curlin's Malibu and Shape Note all won at Churchill Downs last November and each returns to Colonial to try to book another trip. The nine starter handicaps on the card carry combined purses of $612,500, and the top two finishers in every race punch an automatic ticket to the 28th Claiming Crown on Nov. 14 at Churchill Downs. First post is 12:30 p.m. ET on an 11 race program.
The two richest races, the $100,000 Jewel and the $87,500 Emerald, close the card as Races 10 and 11, with defending qualifier winners Cadet Corps and One Time Willard both back to try to repeat. This guide covers the seven qualifiers in between, Races 3 through 9, where Concrete Glory, Curlin's Malibu and Shape Note headline a card built for horses that have earned their spot the hard way.
What Is Claiming Crown Showcase Day
Claiming Crown Showcase Day is Colonial Downs' preview card for the Claiming Crown, the championship series built around claiming horses rather than graded stakes stars. The Virginia track has hosted the qualifiers for two years running, in partnership with the National HBPA, TOBA and the Virginia HBPA. There are no nomination or entry fees to run in the qualifiers, and Colonial runs them as starter handicaps rather than the starter allowance conditions used at Churchill Downs, so horses must be nominated to be weighted into the field. The top two finishers in each of Saturday's nine starter handicaps earn automatic berths into the corresponding race at the Nov. 14 Claiming Crown, and any Showcase Day winner who runs back at Churchill collects a $2,000 travel stipend from the Virginia HBPA.

Ready's Rocket Express: Concrete Glory Chases a Third Straight Trip
A field of seven goes in the $50,000 Ready's Rocket Express Qualifier, Race 3, at six furlongs on dirt for horses that have started for $8,000 or less during their careers. Concrete Glory sits at 9/5 on the morning line and enters as the two time defending Claiming Crown champion in this exact spot. The 7 year old was named the 2025 Claiming Crown Horse of the Year after winning the Ready's Rocket Express at Churchill Downs for the second consecutive year, and he runs for Frank Rupolo's Big Frank Stable and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr with Nik Juarez riding.
Kerness K is the 2/1 second choice and brings an eight race winning streak into Saturday, seven of those wins coming since joining trainer Jamie Ness. The 4 year old most recently rolled to a 7 and a quarter length win at Parx Racing on July 16, and Martin Chuan takes the mount. Concrete Glory's Claiming Crown pedigree makes him the obvious top selection, but a horse riding an eight race streak into a sprint qualifier is exactly the kind of price play this format rewards.
Rapid Transit: Zero Blitz And Bold Diversion Give One Barn A One Two Punch
Seven go in the $62,500 Rapid Transit Qualifier, Race 4, at seven furlongs on dirt for horses that have started for $16,000 or less in 2025 or 2026. Owner trainer Joanne Shankle sends out both the favorite and the second choice. Zero Blitz is 4/5 on the morning line after winning three of seven starts at seven furlongs and finishing ahead of stablemate Bold Diversion in each of their last three meetings. The 4 year old earned a career best Beyer Speed Figure finishing third in the Reigh Count Stakes at Colonial on Aug. 1, one spot ahead of Bold Diversion, and Jorge Ruiz has the call.
Bold Diversion is 3/1 and is stakes placed but still winless in eight starts at this distance. He finished fourth in the Reigh Count after running second to Zero Blitz over the same track and distance on July 13, though his most recent win came at six furlongs at Laurel Park in June. Samuel Marin rides. When one barn holds both ends of the market and the form lines up this cleanly, following the pecking order Shankle has already established on the track is the simpler read.
Iron Horse: Curlin's Malibu Returns To Defend
Nine are entered in the $50,000 Iron Horse Qualifier, Race 5, at 1 1/16 miles on dirt for horses that have started for $8,000 or less. Curlin's Malibu is the 8/5 favorite after sweeping both the Colonial qualifier and the Claiming Crown Iron Horse last year while stabled with Joe Sharp. The 7 year old has since moved to Mike Maker's barn and has made just one start there, finishing last of 10 in a turf route at Ellis Park on July 4. Paco Lopez rides.
Freedom Road has finished runner up in each of the past two Claiming Crown Iron Horses for trainer Richard Sillaman and arrives off a second place finish at Delaware Park on July 10, coming after a win at the same track on May 23. Andrew Wolfsont is aboard. Curlin's Malibu carries the class edge, but his single start for a new barn and a poor turf effort leave a genuine opening for Freedom Road to finally get past him.
Jackie H.: Julee's Legacy Leads A New Fillies And Mares Sprint
New to the Showcase Day lineup this year is the $62,500 Jackie H. Qualifier, Race 6, which drew nine fillies and mares for six furlongs on dirt. The race is restricted to runners that have started for $16,000 or less in 2025 or 2026 and serves as the qualifier for the Claiming Crown Empress. Julee's Legacy is the 3/5 favorite after opening 2026 with four consecutive wins, the latest a 4 and a half length score in an allowance at Charles Town on June 20. Jeiron Barbosa rides for trainer Michael Jones Jr.
Stylet is a logical threat, a four time winner from nine starts this season for trainer Matthew Kintz, and Tiz Purple also merits a look after winning a six furlong starter optional claimer at Delaware by 5 and three quarter lengths on June 20 for trainer Jamie Ness. A short priced favorite in a brand new race always deserves scrutiny, and both Stylet and Tiz Purple bring form that can close the gap.
Canterbury: Shape Note Returns To Defend On Turf
Ten horses fill out the $75,000 Canterbury Qualifier, Race 7, at 5 and a half furlongs on turf for horses that have started for $25,000 or less in 2025 or 2026. Shape Note, winner of last year's Claiming Crown under the same conditions, shares top billing at 5/2 for trainer Mike Maker. He has won three times this year, including a 4 and a half length turf score in May, and most recently won a race moved off the turf at Saratoga on July 18. Jareth Loveberry rides.
Bushido, also 5/2, finished second in both of his Colonial starts this year, including a narrow loss at six furlongs on July 31 after setting the pace. Forest Boyce is up. This looks like a genuine coin flip between the defending champion and a horse that keeps knocking on the door at this exact track.
Glass Slipper: Coquito Heads A Fillies And Mares Handicap
Nine contest Race 8, the $50,000 Glass Slipper Qualifier, a one mile dirt handicap for fillies and mares that have started for $12,500 or less in 2025 or 2026. Coquito is the 9/5 favorite off four wins this year, including mile races in February and April and a seven furlong starter optional claimer in June, and most recently finished third in a seven furlong starter optional claimer at Saratoga on Aug. 7. Paco Lopez rides for trainer Joe Sharp.
Lord's Lady and Golden Eib Micrphn both loom as logical contenders. Lord's Lady has hit the board in six of seven starts this year and most recently rallied for third at Delaware Park on July 29. Golden Eib Micrphn has won five of eight starts in 2026 and enters off a starter optional claiming win at Delaware Park. Coquito's consistency at the distance makes her the fair favorite, but this is a deep enough field that the exacta and trifecta prices are worth a look.
Smiling Ellie Favored To Close Out The Card In The Tiara
The seven race sequence closes with Race 9, the $75,000 Tiara Qualifier, a field of nine fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf restricted to runners that have started for $25,000 or less in 2025 or 2026. Smiling Ellie is the even money favorite for trainer Mark Casse. The mare won a 1 1/16 mile Colonial allowance last summer and heads into the Tiara off a start in the Sunkissed Stakes at Ellis Park on Aug. 2. Simon Marin rides.
Goats On a Tree finished third in last year's Tiara at Churchill Downs and tries again for new trainer Kinnon LaRose. Notable Exchange makes her first start for Mike Maker after being claimed for $50,000 in May and was runner up in a 1 1/16 mile Colonial allowance last August. Smiling Ellie's proven form at this exact track and trip makes her tough to beat, but both Goats On a Tree and Notable Exchange have the class to make her earn it.
