Haskell Stakes Day and Diana Stakes Day: Grade 1 Racing at Monmouth and Saratoga
Two of the best race days of the summer land on the same Saturday. Monmouth Park hosts the $1 million Grade 1 Haskell Stakes while Saratoga runs the $500,000 Grade 1 Diana Stakes, giving bettors a full slate of graded stakes on both coasts of the Northeast racing map on July 18.
The Haskell brings together the top three year old colts left standing after the Triple Crown, headlined by Preakness winner Napoleon Solo and Kentucky Derby beaten favorite Further Ado. The Diana pulls in the best turf fillies and mares in training, with Chad Brown saddling four of the seven runners as he chases his eleventh win in the race.
Both cards carry serious mainstream attention and both offer plenty of angles for bettors working across multiple bet types.
Two Grade 1s, One Saturday: Haskell Stakes Day Meets Diana Stakes Day
Monmouth Park's Haskell Stakes Day features six stakes races worth close to $2.75 million in total purses, anchored by the Grade 1 Haskell itself at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. Race 12 on the card, the Haskell carries an approximate post time of 5:45pm ET and doubles as a Breeders Cup Challenge Win and You're In race, with the winner earning an automatic paid berth in the $7 million Longines Classic at Keeneland on October 31.
Up in Saratoga Springs, the Diana Stakes runs as race 5 of 12 with a post time of 2:46pm ET. Run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, the Diana has also been part of the Breeders Cup Challenge series, sending its winner to the Filly and Mare Turf. Saratoga's Saturday card sits inside the track's 46 day summer meet, which opened July 3 and runs through Labor Day.
Fans following both cards have a rare chance to watch a Triple Crown alumni showdown in New Jersey and a title defending trainer chase history in upstate New York, all in the same afternoon.
What Is the Haskell Stakes?
The Grade 1 Haskell Stakes is Monmouth Park's signature event, run each summer since 1968 for three year olds at 1 1/8 miles on the main track. Named for Amory L. Haskell, the former chairman of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club, the race carries a $1 million purse for its 59th running in 2026.
The Haskell has long served as a proving ground for the divisional championship. Nine past winners went on to be named champion three year old male, and five, Holy Bull, Point Given, Rachel Alexandra, American Pharoah, and Authentic, went on to be named Horse of the Year. Trainer Bob Baffert has won the race a record nine times, though he does not have a runner in this year's edition.
2026 Haskell Stakes Field and Fractional Odds
| Post | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Star Sweeper | Louis C. Linder Jr. | Luis R. Rivera Jr. | 30-1 |
| 2 | Further Ado | Brad H. Cox | Irad Ortiz Jr. | 2-1 |
| 3 | Baby Vino | Lindsay Schultz | Jorge A. Vargas Jr. | 15-1 |

| 6 | Napoleon Solo | Chad Summers | Paco Lopez | 5-2 |
| 7 | Ocelli | D. Whitworth Beckman | Tyler Gaffalione | 6-1 |
Further Ado enters as the 2-1 morning line favorite for trainer Brad Cox, who called him the best two turn three year old in the country after his post position draw. The Gun Runner colt won the Blue Grass Stakes by 11 lengths before finishing 11th in the Kentucky Derby after traffic trouble, then rebounded with a win in the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs. Irad Ortiz Jr. rides.
Napoleon Solo sits as the 5-2 second choice for trainer Chad Summers. The Preakness winner makes his first start for new ownership group ESPOIR USA after a reported multimillion dollar sale from original owner Al Gold. Paco Lopez keeps the mount.
Iron Honor is the 3-1 third choice for Chad Brown, the only member of racing's traditional Haskell powerhouse trainers with a runner this year. He finished second in the Preakness by 1 1/4 lengths after his connections removed the blinkers. Flavien Prat rides.
The Puma returns from a layoff at 7-2 for trainer Gustavo Delgado after a leg infection forced him out of the Kentucky Derby. He was runner up in the Florida Derby. Luis Saez rides for the first time.
Ocelli carries 6-1 odds as the highest earning maiden in North American history, with $806,800 in the bank from top three finishes in the Wood Memorial, Kentucky Derby, and Ohio Derby. Tyler Gaffalione stays on board.
Baby Vino is set at 15-1 off a 10 3/4 length romp in the Pegasus Stakes, Monmouth's local Haskell prep. Star Sweeper rounds out the field at 30-1 after a fifth place finish in that same Pegasus.

What Is the Diana Stakes?
The Grade 1 Diana Stakes has run at Saratoga Race Course since 1939, named for the mythological goddess of the hunt. Open to fillies and mares age three and up, the race is contested at 1 1/8 miles on the turf and carries a $500,000 purse. It became a Grade 1 in 2003.
No trainer owns the Diana quite like Chad Brown. He has won the race 10 times overall, including the last four in a row, and every one of his victories has come since 2011. Four of his winners, Rushing Fall, Sistercharlie, Lady Eli, and Zagora, went on to be named champion older female turf horse.
2026 Diana Stakes Field and Fractional Odds
| No. | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dynamic Pricing | Chad Brown | Edgard Zayas | 6-1 |
| 2 | Cathedral | Kevin De Foy Philippart | Ricardo Santana Jr. | 6-1 |
| 3 | Kathynmarissa | Chad Brown | Jose Ortiz | 5-2 |
| 4 | Portfolio Duration | Chad Brown | Manny Franco | 2-1 |
| 5 | Five G | George Weaver | John Velazquez | 15-1 |
| 6 | Segesta | Chad Brown | Dylan Davis | 7-2 |
| 7 | Ozara | Miguel Clement | Jamie Rodriguez | 10-1 |
Portfolio Duration heads the market at 2-1 for Chad Brown. The lightly raced four year old missed the Distaff Turf Mile by a neck before breaking through in the New York Stakes at Saratoga to become a Grade 1 winner. Manny Franco, a former Diana winner himself aboard Althiqa in 2021, rides.
Kathynmarissa is next at 5-2, also for Brown. She won the Modesty Stakes on Kentucky Derby weekend and was third in the New York Stakes behind her stablemate. Jose Ortiz, the current leader of the Saratoga jockey standings, has the mount.
Segesta carries 7-2 odds as the third Brown runner and our top pick for the race. The mare has run in Grade 1 company in her last four starts across three tracks, winning the Matriarch at Del Mar and the Jenny Wiley at Keeneland this year while banking more than $1.5 million in career earnings. Dylan Davis rides.
Dynamic Pricing rounds out the Brown quartet at 6-1 after finishing second in the Beaugay Stakes and fourth in the Jenny Wiley. Edgard Zayas is aboard.
Cathedral arrives from Europe at 6-1 for trainer Kevin De Foy Philippart, making just her second American start after finishing fourth in last year's Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf as a 90-1 long shot. Ricardo Santana Jr. rides.
Ozara is set at 10-1 with a perfect record in three career starts at Saratoga, including last year's Ballston Spa Stakes. Five G completes the field at 15-1 for Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, who has won the Diana six times since 1995.
Our Angle on Saturday's Card
We like Further Ado to confirm favoritism in the Haskell. His trouble trip in the Derby is easy to forgive given the class he showed winning the Blue Grass by open lengths, and Irad Ortiz Jr. gets a class edge in a field where the pace should be honest enough to set up a closer. History backs the pick too, with 12 of the last 21 Haskell winners going off as the betting favorite. We would pair him with Napoleon Solo and Iron Honor in exacta and trifecta combinations given how tightly matched the top three choices look on paper.
| Bet Type | Selection | Odds | Our Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win | Further Ado | 2-1 | Blue Grass class outweighs the Derby traffic trouble. Favorites have won 12 of the last 21 runnings. |
| Each Way Value | Napoleon Solo | 5-2 | Preakness winner with tactical speed. First start for new ownership is the only concern. |
| Exacta Box | Further Ado / Napoleon Solo / Iron Honor | 2-1, 5-2, 3-1 | Top three choices are tightly matched off Triple Crown form. Box for coverage. |
| Trifecta | Further Ado / Napoleon Solo / Iron Honor / Ocelli | 2-1, 5-2, 3-1, 6-1 | Ocelli's Derby and Preakness placings make him the logical fourth for minor award coverage. |
| Longshot Watch | Baby Vino | 15-1 | 10 3/4 length Pegasus romp shows he handles the Monmouth strip. Live underneath. |
In the Diana, we lean toward Segesta over her Brown stablemates. Her recent form against tougher Grade 1 fields stands out, and a trainer who has won nine of the last ten runnings of this race gives every one of his runners a puncher's chance. For value hunters, Cathedral's European form and the recent success of Saratoga turf shippers make her worth a small each way play underneath.
| Bet Type | Selection | Odds | Our Angle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Win | Segesta | 7-2 | Strongest recent Grade 1 form of the four Brown runners, with over $1.5 million in career earnings. |
| Each Way Value | Cathedral | 6-1 | European form and a shorter trip than her Breeders Cup try suit her. Saratoga turf shippers have run well this year. |
| Exacta Box | Segesta / Portfolio Duration | 7-2, 2-1 | Brown's two strongest runners on recent form and earnings. |
| Trifecta | Segesta / Portfolio Duration / Kathynmarissa | 7-2, 2-1, 5-2 | All three Brown runners have hit the board in their last three starts apiece. |
| Longshot Watch | Ozara | 10-1 | Undefeated in three career starts at Saratoga, including last year's Ballston Spa. Live underneath. |
