Hong Kong Champions Day 2026 Preview and Betting Tips: Ka Ying Rising Hunts 20 Straight as Romantic Warrior Faces Global Raid

Three Group 1s, US$10 million on the line, and the world's best horse bidding for history at Sha Tin. Full card preview, runner-by-runner analysis, and MyWinners tips for every feature race on Sunday, April 26.

FWD Champions Day at a Glance

Sha Tin Racecourse hosts the biggest spring meeting in world racing on Sunday, April 26, 2026, with FWD Champions Day putting up a record HK$78 million (roughly US$10 million) across three Group 1 features. Thirteen overseas raiders from Japan, Britain, France, Ireland and the UAE have shipped in to take on Hong Kong's two global superstars — Ka Ying Rising and Romantic Warrior — in what's shaping up as the deepest edition of the meeting on record.

Ka Ying Rising, the world's top-rated racehorse, is chasing his 20th straight win in the Chairman's Sprint Prize. Romantic Warrior, horse racing's all-time money earner with north of HK$254 million banked, is bidding to become the first four-time winner of the FWD QEII Cup. And the FWD Champions Mile, as always, is the wide-open middle leg — eleven live contenders and no clear favorite heading into post time.

Here's the full preview and our best tips for every Group 1 on the card.

Chairman's Sprint Prize (G1, 1,200m)

The Storyline

This is the one everybody is watching. Ka Ying Rising comes in on a 19-race winning streak — already a Hong Kong record — and a win here makes it 20 straight. He's the reigning Chairman's Sprint Prize champion, holds the Sha Tin course records at 1,200m and 1,400m, and smashed his own track record again in the G2 Sprint Cup on April 6. Trainer David Hayes and jockey Zac Purton have had this race circled on the calendar all spring.

There's also a HK$5 million Hong Kong Speed Series bonus on the line — Ka Ying Rising has already banked one and would pocket a second by winning here.

The Threat

Japan sends Satono Reve, trained by Noriyuki Hori, who's beaten everything in Japan twice in a row in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen but has finished behind Ka Ying Rising at the top level on both previous meetings. He's the textbook foreign raider — talented, in form, and going up against a generational horse.

Native Approach ships in from the UAE off a win in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan. Ireland's Comanche Brave, trained by Donnacha O'Brien, adds more international flavor. The home defense is led by Helios Express (Hugh Bowman booked to ride for John Size), with Fast Network, Raging Blizzard and Tomodachi also in the mix.

MyWinners Tip

Ka Ying Rising is the horse of a lifetime and there's no credible case against him on form. The issue is the price — he'll go to post somewhere around -1000 to -500, which is an awful win bet. There's no value at those numbers.

The play is to use him as a single in exotics. Key Ka Ying Rising on top in the exacta over Satono Reve, Helios Express and Fast Network. In the trifecta, Ka Ying Rising on top / Satono Reve, Helios Express, Fast Network second / same trio plus Native Approach third. Satono Reve is the best price for place money if you want a straight bet — he's been a clear second-best to Ka Ying Rising on both previous attempts and has a fair chance to run into that exacta slot again.

  • Top pick: Ka Ying Rising (single in exotics only).

  • Exacta: Ka Ying Rising on top over Satono Reve, Helios Express and Fast Network. Satono Reve is the anchor of the second slot — he's the one horse in the race with a realistic path to second if Ka Ying Rising does what he always does.

  • Best longshot: Native Approach. The Al Quoz form has historically traveled well to Sha Tin and he's the kind of price (likely +2000 or bigger) that makes sense underneath for the trifecta.

FWD Champions Mile (G1, 1,600m)

The Storyline

The most competitive of the three Group 1s and the race with the clearest path to a betting score. Japan's Jantar Mantar ships in as a four-time Group 1 winner at a mile — he's taken the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, NHK Mile Cup, Yasuda Kinen and Mile Championship — and he's arguably the best-credentialed raider in the field. Britain sends Docklands. Strauss adds another international runner to the mix.

The home team is led by Triple Crown winner Voyage Bubble, defending Champions Mile champion Red Lion, Group 1 winner Lucky Sweynesse, and BMW Hong Kong Derby hero Invincible Ibis representing the four-year-old crop. Galaxy Patch, My Wish, Cap Ferrat, Sunlight Power, Chancheng Glory, Copartner Prance and Little Paradise complete the lineup.

The Angle

Only two international horses have won the Champions Mile since 2000 — Variety Club in 2014 and Maurice in 2016. That's a seriously tough stat for the overseas runners to overcome, and it's the single most important handicapping angle in the race. The Hong Kong mile specialists have owned this race for a reason: the Sha Tin turf, the tight turn, and the tempo all favor horses who've run the track.

Four-year-olds have an even worse record. No local four-year-old has won the Champions Mile since Xtension in 2011, and before that, Able One in 2007. Even the great Able Friend couldn't manage it. That's a tough angle against Invincible Ibis and Little Paradise despite their obvious talent.

MyWinners Tip

This looks like a straight choice between Voyage Bubble and Jantar Mantar, with Red Lion as the third leg of the ticket. Voyage Bubble is the horse with the best combination of class, course-and-distance form, and local mile record — and he's the one we want on top.

He finished second to Romantic Warrior in the Jockey Club Cup over 2,000m in December, won the Triple Crown this season, and drops back to his ideal trip at 1,600m here. He's been the most consistent top-end miler in Hong Kong for two years running. If he goes to post at +300 or better, that's a bet.

Jantar Mantar is the live overseas threat, but he's coming off a four-month break since the Mile Championship in November and has to overcome both the travel and the Sha Tin history. At a likely +400 to +600, he's worth including in exotics but not the win bet.

  • Top pick: Voyage Bubble to win at +300 or better.

  • Exacta box: Voyage Bubble / Jantar Mantar / Red Lion.

  • Best longshot: Lucky Sweynesse. Group 1-winning form on his day, knows the track, and should offer double-digit odds (+1000 or better) as part of your trifecta spread.

FWD QEII Cup (G1, 2,000m)

The Storyline

This is the marquee race of the day — HK$30 million on the line, the deepest field in years, and one of the all-time great racehorses bidding for history. Romantic Warrior has won this race three years running (2022, 2023, 2024) and is now attempting to become the first four-time QEII Cup winner. At almost eight years old, the question isn't whether he's good enough — it's whether the toll of his globe-trotting career is starting to catch up.

Trainer Danny Shum told reporters after Romantic Warrior's fourth straight Hong Kong Cup win in December that he isn't sure the horse is getting any better, but he's definitely not declining. He hasn't raced since that Cup win, which is a stretched layoff for a horse his age.

The Challengers

Japan's Masquerade Ball is the serious threat. He ran Calandagan to within a whisker in last November's G1 Japan Cup over 2,400m and drops to his best trip at 2,000m here. Britain's Royal Champion arrives off a win in the G1 Neom Turf Cup in Saudi Arabia. Japan's Museum Mile is a dual Group 1 winner and the lightly-raced five-for-ten type who tends to show up in big spots.

Prognosis is another Japanese runner. The local defense beyond Romantic Warrior includes Ensued, Rubylot, Numbers, Stormy Grove and Gentlemen Legacy, with Hong Kong Derby winner Invincible Ibis also possibly taking this route.

MyWinners Tip

The temptation is to bet against Romantic Warrior on age, layoff and the quality of the opposition — and it's a real concern. But this horse keeps rewriting his own story, and Sha Tin 2,000m is his best trip at his best track. He's 3-for-3 in this specific race with a world-class rider in James McDonald (or whoever gets the call) and he went off the heavy favorite in the December Hong Kong Cup and still won comfortably.

Still, this is the time to take him on. Masquerade Ball is the right price to beat him. He'll be around +250 to +350 while Romantic Warrior goes off at a short minus number, and the form line through Calandagan in the Japan Cup is as strong as anything Romantic Warrior has to show. Drops back to his best trip, fresh, and with nothing to prove at this level — Masquerade Ball is the bet.

  • Top pick: Masquerade Ball to win at +300 or better.

  • Saver: Romantic Warrior to place. If he's a heavy favorite to win, the place price will still be worth something and gives you insurance if the champion rolls one more time.

  • Exacta: Masquerade Ball on top over Romantic Warrior / Museum Mile / Royal Champion.

  • Best longshot: Museum Mile. Five wins from ten starts, two at the top level, and the profile of a horse still on the way up. Live at +800 or better.

MyWinners Best Bets for Champions Day

Pulling it all together, here's how we're playing the three Group 1s at MyWinners.

  • Single-race win bets: Voyage Bubble (Champions Mile) and Masquerade Ball (QEII Cup). Both should offer fair prices against favorites and both have legitimate winning chances.

  • Multi-race play — Pick 3 (Races 5-7-9): Ka Ying Rising (single) / Voyage Bubble, Jantar Mantar, Red Lion / Masquerade Ball, Romantic Warrior, Museum Mile. Nine combinations, relatively cheap exposure to a huge potential score if the two value plays land.

  • Trifecta — QEII Cup: Masquerade Ball on top / Romantic Warrior, Museum Mile, Royal Champion / the same trio plus Prognosis third. Best value play on the card if Masquerade Ball gets loose on the front end or inherits a clean trip.

  • Exacta — Champions Mile: Voyage Bubble over Jantar Mantar and Red Lion. Smaller ticket, cleaner angle.

Can Ka Ying Rising really win 20 in a row?
He's a heavy favorite to do exactly that. Ka Ying Rising is the reigning Chairman's Sprint Prize champion, holds the Sha Tin course records at both 1,200m and 1,400m, and just broke his own track record again in his final prep on April 6. Trainer David Hayes, jockey Zac Purton and a relatively comfortable draw all point toward extending the streak.
How do I bet on Hong Kong Champions Day in the US?
MyWinners offers full-card wagering on Hong Kong Champions Day for account holders in licensed jurisdictions. Win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, superfecta and Pick 3 wagering are all available, and World Pool commingling means US bets feed into the main Hong Kong pari-mutuel pools for the three Group 1s.
Who's the biggest threat to Romantic Warrior in the QEII Cup?
Japan's Masquerade Ball is the most serious challenger. He ran France's Calandagan to a photo finish in last November's Group 1 Japan Cup over 2,400m and drops back to his best trip at 2,000m here. Britain's Royal Champion (winner of the G1 Neom Turf Cup) and Japan's Museum Mile are the other top overseas runners.
