Forever young. I want to be forever young. I have had the Alphaville song stuck in my head for seven days. The 1984 one. The synth one. You know exactly which one. My wife asked me to stop humming it on Saturday. On Sunday she asked again, slower. On Monday she left a printout on the kitchen table about a couples' retreat in Vermont with the words "no phones, no racing" highlighted, and I honestly can't tell if it was a suggestion or a threat. I looked the song up and apparently it's about Cold War nuclear anxiety, which is not what I was feeling, but it's close, because last Friday at the new Belmont Park, Forever Young won the Gold Cup by three and a quarter lengths and my exacta box, Phileas Fogg and Forever Young, went down in flames. Phileas Fogg didn't hit the board. Stars and Stripes, the 15/1 shot I dismissed in five words, ran second. I had half the exacta. The half that doesn't pay.
Then Yoshito Yahagi, who trains the highest-earning horse ever to race on this continent, stood in the winner's circle after a million-dollar Grade 1 and said he was "50 percent satisfied." Fifty. He rated the horse 80 percent fit. That's the best older horse in the world, running at 80 percent, winning by daylight, and the trainer wants more.
I lost my bet and I'm 100 percent satisfied, because the Breeders' Cup Futures pool opens today at noon ET and Forever Young is 5/2 for Keeneland on Halloween. I've never been more sure of anything. Which is exactly what I said about Phileas Fogg. Bet accordingly.

→ 🏇 SUPER SATURDAY: THE NEW BELMONT GETS ITS FIRST TURF G1
Last Friday was the dirt. Tomorrow is the grass. The Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1, $500K, 1 1/2 miles, race 10, 5:19pm ET) is the first top-level race ever run over the rebuilt Belmont turf course, and the Europeans have come for it. Seven go to post.
El Cordobes (5/2) is the morning-line favorite, back from Europe after finishing third in this race last year. Minaret Station (7/2) is the second choice and the one the locals are talking about; WinStar's Elliott Walden has been talking him up for this all month. Point of Arras (4/1) and Fort George (9/2) are the other two European shippers, and Far Bridge, who won this race in 2024, is back to see if the new course rides like the old one. A mile and a half on fresh turf with three overseas horses is a pace puzzle. Whoever gets a soft lead over the first six furlongs is going to be hard to run down.
Two Breeders' Cup tickets are on the line earlier in the card. The Flower Bowl (G2, $500K) is a "Win and You're In" for the Filly & Mare Turf. The Vosburgh (G3, $250K, 7 furlongs, race 9, 4:44pm ET) is a "Win and You're In" for the Sprint, and it's the deepest race of the day: ten runners, four of them back from the Forego. Senior Officer is the likely favorite for Brad Cox with Flavien Prat riding, first or second in all seven career starts. T Kraft dead-heated with him for second in the Forego. Crazy Mason was a head behind them. Moonlight ships in from California as the closer. That's four horses separated by two feet last time. If you like a spread exacta, this is your race.
The Gallant Bloom (G2, $250K, 6 1/2 furlongs, race 4, 1:50pm ET) opens the stakes action. R Disaster won it last year on the front end and she's the one to catch again. Six fillies and mares, and the pace is hers if she wants it.

If you only bet one harness card all year, this is it. Tomorrow night at Woodbine Mohawk Park, five Grade 1s go in a row, two of them worth a million dollars apiece. First post 6:30pm ET, which means it starts right as Belmont finishes. You can do both. I'm doing both.
The Metro Pace (G1, $1M CAD) is the two-year-old pacing championship, and it's got a horse in it who hasn't lost. Shalom Hanover is seven-for-seven in stakes for trainer Dr. Ian Moore, including a Nassagaweya, a Dream Maker, and the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final. He won his elimination. Eastie Boy won the other elimination and is the one with a chance to beat him. Undefeated two-year-olds in a $1M final are how legends get made or how favorites get beat. I'm not fading him.
The Mohawk Million (G1, $1M CAD) is the two-year-old trotting equivalent, and Marcus Melander is going for three in a row. His hope is Athenas Girl, the Peaceful Way winner, who drew post two with Dexter Dunn driving. Melander has won this race twice running. When a barn owns a race like that, you bet the barn.
Then three more G1s: the Canadian Trotting Classic ($590K CAD), She's A Great Lady ($510K CAD), and the Elegantimage ($400K CAD). Plus three $75K Free-For-Alls. Eight stakes, $3.5 million Canadian, and 3% cashback on every dollar you put through it because it's Canadian harness. That's not a promo. That's a rebate for showing up. → 🌴 SANTA ANITA RETURNS: THE GOODWOOD IS THE CLASSIC'S LAST WEST COAST PREP
The Great Race Place opens today and runs through November 1, and the opening weekend is built entirely around the Breeders' Cup. Seven "Win and You're In" races across the meet, four of them this weekend. The big one is tomorrow's Goodwood (G1, $300K, 1 1/8 miles, race 8, 7:30pm ET), the last major West Coast prep for the Classic. Ferdinand, Tiznow, Pleasantly Perfect, Mucho Macho Man, and Accelerate all won this and then won the Classic. Nine go, and Bob Baffert, who's won it nine times, has two of them.
Nevada Beach (7/5) won this race last year as a three-year-old, then ran seventh behind Forever Young in the Classic. He hasn't run since stumbling at the start of the Saudi Cup in February. Seven months off. You know how I feel about layoff favorites. You also know how that went for me last week.
Caldera (5/1) is the one in form: three-for-three this year for Saffie Joseph Jr., every win by daylight, all at a mile. This is the class jump and the distance stretch. Forged Steel (5/1) is his stablemate, and when he's on the lead he's a monster (9 1/2 lengths in the Hollywood Gold Cup in May), but he's been flat in two starts since. Original Sin (6/1) ran second to Knightsbridge in the Pacific Classic and closes into whatever pace those two set. Mr. A. P. (8/1) is the only three-year-old, worked the fastest five furlongs of 75 at Santa Anita last Sunday, and is a wild card. Taif (8/1) is Baffert's other, making his stakes debut in a G1, which tells you what the barn thinks.
Sunday brings two more qualifiers: the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G2, $200K) and the Zenyatta (G2, $200K) for fillies and mares. Plus the City of Hope Mile (G2, $200K) tomorrow, which is a Mile qualifier. 🏇 Churchill Downs: Lukas Classic Day, tomorrow. Three stakes, $1.2 million, first post 12:45pm ET. The Lukas Classic (G2, $500K, 1 1/8 miles) is where Banishing and Chunk of Gold went instead of the Gold Cup. Banishing has won 11 of 32 with $3.2 million in the bank, took the Godolphin Mile at Meydan this year, and was second in the Charles Town Classic three weeks ago. He's the one to beat. Tiztastic (Louisiana Derby winner), Dragoon Guard for Brad Cox, and Original Sin and McAfee (both cross-entered in the Goodwood, so check the scratches) fill it out. The Ack Ack (G3, $400K) and Bourbon Flight ($300K) are the support. Closing week at Churchill, and the Jackpot 8 carryover is still live (see below). 🏇 Newmarket: Cambridgeshire Saturday. Two G1s and the most famous handicap in England, all before lunch on the East Coast. The Cheveley Park (G1, 6f, 9:27am ET) is the race of the day and maybe the race of the season for two-year-old fillies: Sun Goddess (Moyglare winner, going for five straight, Aidan O'Brien chasing a record seventh win in the race), Senorita Bonita (Prix Morny winner), and Libertango for George Boughey. Six runners. Three of them could be champions. The Middle Park (G1, 6f, 10am ET) lost its two market leaders at declaration, so Godolphin's Inner City Blues is now 13/8 favorite for Charlie Appleby, who's won it two years running. Then the Cambridgeshire Handicap (10:40am ET): 28 runners across the Rowley Mile, Gavriel the clear favorite for the Gosdens, and Karl Burke going for three in a row with topweight Thunder Run. Big field, big pools, set your alarm. The Newmarket runners are covered in the Super Saturday guide too.
🇮🇪 Curragh: Beresford Stakes, tomorrow. A G2 for two-year-olds that's now a Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier. Whoever wins gets points toward Churchill in May. Worth ten minutes of your Saturday morning.
🏇 Woodbine: Breeders' Stakes Day, Sunday. The Breeders' Stakes ($400K plus up to $100K in Ontario-bred bonuses, 1 1/2 miles on the E.P. Taylor turf, race 9, 5:30pm ET) is the third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, the only Triple Crown in the world run on three different surfaces. Luster won the King's Plate on the synthetic by 7 1/4 lengths. Military Time won the Prince of Wales on the dirt at Fort Erie. Neither of them runs Sunday, so the Crown stays split and the final leg is wide open: six go, and the filly Katie's Grace is the likely favorite against five colts, getting three pounds, off a close second in the Wonder Where over 1 1/4 miles on this turf. Bond Market is the only turf winner in the field. Buium is still a maiden after ten starts but was beaten under a length in the Prince of Wales. First post is 1pm ET, but the Breeders' Stakes itself doesn't go until 5:30pm ET, so don't set your alarm for the wrong one. The Grand Valley ($150K) supports. 🏇 Remington Park: Oklahoma Derby Day, Sunday. Eight stakes, $1.3 million guaranteed. The Oklahoma Derby (G3, $400K) is the feature for three-year-olds, with the Great West Turf Sprint ($250K), Remington Park Oaks ($200K), and Clever Trevor ($150K) in support. Oklahoma-bred purse supplements mean some of these races pay more than they say. Sunday afternoon after Belmont's done, and all eight stakes are in the Sunday guide.
🏇 Belmont Park, the rest of the weekend. Today it's the Beldame (G2, $250K) for fillies and mares, first post 1:10pm ET; Rob's guide has the field, with Nitrogen the one to beat. Sunday brings the Belmont Turf Sprint (G3, $200K) and the Winter Memories (G3, $200K), $400K across two, first post 1:10pm ET. Three days, seven graded stakes, one racetrack.
🐴 Harness beyond Mohawk. Tonight at Hoosier Park it's a Grand Circuit card: two $200K Kentuckiana Stallion finals, the Hoosier Park Pacing Derby ($175K), Jenna's Beach Boy ($125K), and the Phil Langley Memorial ($100K), with the Caesars Trotting Classic, Elevation, and Madison County on the same program. 🇭🇰 Hong Kong: JJ's form book goes live next week. We said a few weeks back that our international racing expert JJ is in Hong Kong this season, hunting winners to share. The form book goes live next week now the season is properly under way. These are the deepest pools you can fish. Last weekend at Sha Tin, Race 7: the Tricast paid $13,055 to a $1 stake (12-1-6, if those are your lucky numbers). Same race, exacta, $262.30 to a buck. Nice. Sha Tin is off this Sunday, but JJ still slipped us the one to follow: 我爱我的赢家网. 🐕 Greyhounds. Wheeling Downs and Tri-State run every night this week except Monday. Same drill: they're top-five tracks on the platform by handle, the trifectas pay because nobody does the homework, and the daily tip sheets for both are in the Handicapping Store alongside the Racing Dudes thoroughbred picks. What to bet on
🏈 NFL. All three of ours play at 1pm ET on Sunday, which is either a blessing or a scheduling crime depending on how many TVs you own. The Jets go to Detroit as 6.5-point dogs, and Victor's laying the points against them (see below), which I'm choosing to take personally. The Giants host the Titans at MetLife: Tennessee is 0-2 and lost to the Jets in Week 1, so this is the one where the Giants need to look like a team. The Patriots are at Jacksonville at 1pm ET, a 1-1 team against a 1-1 team, and the kind of game where the road dog cashes. Then the NFL's first regular-season game in Rio de Janeiro, Ravens and Cowboys at the Maracana, 4:25pm ET, which I will be watching purely to see what a football field looks like in a soccer cathedral.
🏈 College Football. #1 Texas at #14 Tennessee, noon ET on ABC, at Neyland Stadium with College GameDay on site. Texas has never played in Knoxville before. Number one on the road against a top-15 SEC team is the best game of the day and it's on before Belmont's first stakes.

Tomorrow night's Goodwood at Santa Anita, 7:30pm ET. $1 trifecta box: Nevada Beach, Caldera, Original Sin. Six combos, $6. Here's why. Nevada Beach has been off seven months, but he won this exact race last year and Baffert has won it nine times. Forever Young just showed me what a layoff favorite looks like when the barn knows what it's doing. Caldera is three-for-three and is the horse in the best form in the race. Original Sin is the closer who runs into the pace those two and Forged Steel will set. Three horses, three running styles, one trifecta. If Forged Steel wires them I'll eat this newsletter.

👉 Raiders +3.5 @ Saints. Victor: "Could the Raiders start 3-0 with Kirk Cousins? Probably not, but I think it will be close."

P.P.S. Big week for New Haven. U.S. News just ranked Yale the fourth-best university in America. The campus is about four furlongs from my front door. I did not go there. I was accepted to a different program, the School of Thoroughbred Studies, which meets daily at the rail and where the required reading is the Daily Racing Form.
