My father used to take me to Belmont Park on Saturdays when I was ten. We'd drive out from the city, park in the same lot every time, and he'd buy me a hot dog before the first race. He never explained how to read the Racing Form. He just handed it to me and said "figure it out." I picked horses by name. He picked horses by the way they walked in the post parade. He was better at it than me, but not by as much as you'd think. That building, that grandstand, that stretch of dirt where I watched my first horse cross the wire in front, is gone now. They tore it all down.
And they built something new. $455 million. Four new tracks. A synthetic surface, two turf courses, and a rebuilt dirt oval. On Friday September 18, the new Belmont Park opens its doors for the first time.
The centerpiece is the $1,000,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1, 1 1/4 miles), a Breeders' Cup Classic "Win and You're In" qualifier. The entry list is shaping up to be something special.
Forever Young is confirmed. The Japanese-bred superstar shipped to New York this week and is training at Belmont ahead of his Gold Cup start. He won the 2025 Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar by a half-length over Sierra Leone, finished second to Magnitude in the Dubai World Cup in March, and is taking the New York route back to defend his Classic title in October. Yoshito Yahagi is sending him to the biggest stage in American racing, at a brand new track, against a field that wants to knock him off.
Sovereignty is 50/50. The reigning Horse of the Year, the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner, the horse who demolished the Travers field by 10 lengths last August. Scott Symonds reported this week that connections haven't committed. If he shows, this becomes the race of the fall. If he doesn't, it's still Forever Young against a deep field, but the electricity goes up about ten notches with Sovereignty in the gate.
Banishing is heading to the Gold Cup. The six-year-old Ghostzapper gelding has won at distances from six furlongs to nine furlongs, so the mile and a quarter is a stretch, but David Jacobson wouldn't point him here without a plan. Money Game, Phileas Fogg, and potentially Antiquarian (the defending champion) round out the contenders.
This is the first Grade 1 at the new Belmont Park. FOX has the broadcast. Dierks Bentley is playing a concert. Tickets are extremely limited. This is not your grandfather's Belmont. It's something nobody has seen yet.

This is the biggest racing Saturday of the fall.I counted the stakes purse money across tomorrow's global card. It's north of $15 million. On one Saturday. In September. If you don't know what to bet, that's the wrong problem to have. The problem is how to bet all of it before the pools close.
🇨🇦 Woodbine Turf Champions Day (1pm ET)
Four Grade 1 Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course. The $1 million Woodbine Mile headlines the card, and on paper it's a two-horse race. Notable Speech is Godolphin's only runner, stepping up from seven furlongs to a mile, but he's a Guineas winner so the extra distance shouldn't be a problem. Deterministic is the other side of the argument: six straight wins including four Grade 1s, back-to-back Fourstardaves and the Manhattan. The better recent record, but he's never seen the E.P. 🇺🇸 Churchill Downs September Meet ($1.6M)
The Road to the 153rd Kentucky Derby starts tomorrow. The Iroquois (G3, $300K) is the first points race on the trail, and Bob Baffert's Salahudin is the one everyone's chasing. The $1 million International Trot (G1) at 3:23pm ET. Defending champion Lexus Kody draws post one for Ron Burke and Jason Bartlett. Ten-horse international field including raiders from France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, and Germany. Tomorrow is enormous in Europe too.
🇬🇧 The 250th St Leger at Doncaster. The oldest classic in the world, run since 1776. Betfred Derby winner Christmas Day leads the market at around 7/4. Maltese Cross was withdrawn in late August and is now headed to the Arc instead. On the World Pool.
🇮🇪 Then the Irish Champions Festival at Leopardstown (Saturday) and the Curragh (Sunday). The Irish Champion Stakes drew 48 entries at the preliminary stage, 18 of them Group 1 winners. Calandagan, the 2025 world champion. Daryz, the reigning Arc hero and 9/4 Arc favorite.
Sunday at the Curragh: four Group 1s. Irish St Leger, Flying Five, National Stakes, Moyglare. Constitution Hill, the hurdling legend turned flat runner, lines up in the Irish St Leger. All on the World Pool.

🎯 MIKE B'S EXOTIC OF THE WEEK: The Kentucky Turf Cup was heartbreaking. Tiffany won at 7/1, and I had her on top. Beautiful. But Ethical Diamond ran second instead of Burnham Square or Ole Crazy Bone, so the exacta box didn't cash. I was one horse away from looking like a genius. Instead I'm looking like a guy who spent $6 on a math problem. For those of you old enough to remember Tears for Fears, that's what I'm listening to right now. Shout. Shout. Let it all out. These are the bets I can do without. Come on.
This week: the Woodbine Mile. $1 trifecta key: Notable Speech on top, with Deterministic, Archivist, and Irish Aces underneath for second and third. The defending champ is stepping up in trip but he's a Guineas winner. Deterministic has six straight wins including four G1s but has never seen this course. Three horses underneath, six combos, $6. If Notable Speech repeats, I'm buying the first round at Bobby V's.

🏈 NFL WK 1: THE JETS ARE BACK 🙏
Seahawks beat the Patriots 13-10 on Wednesday. Drake Maye threw three picks. The 49ers played the Rams in Melbourne last night, the first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia.
Sunday is the real slate. The Jets open at Tennessee at 1pm ET. My expectations are simultaneously sky-high and anchored to the ocean floor, which is the only healthy way to be a Jets fan. Cowboys at Giants Sunday Night Football at 8:20pm ET. Monday: Chiefs vs Broncos at Arrowhead, 8:15pm ET, where Mahomes returns from the torn ACL.
