Mr. Buff tops Aqueduct’s Stymie Stakes on Saturday

Mr. Buff tops Aqueduct’s Stymie Stakes on Saturday
Thursday, February 25 // By the New York Hot List Staff

If you’re looking for a reminder that we’re in the midst of winter, you’ll find one Saturday at Aqueduct. Nothing says winter better than Mr. Buff serving as a heavy favorite in an Aqueduct stakes, which is what you’ll find Saturday in the $125,000 Stymie Stakes at the Big A. The 7-year-old New York State-bred gelding who owns a record of nine wins and four seconds from 16 starts at Aqueduct will try to add to that total when he takes on four rivals in the Stymie.

Here’s the Hot List picks:

Aqueduct, Saturday, Race 3.

(3) Mr. Buff was at his best when he won the Jazil for the third year in a row by seven-lengths while earning a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure. The 7-year-old’s record at Aqueduct is fantastic, 16: 9-4-0, with two of those wins coming at today’s one-mile distance. Nine-furlongs might be his best distance, but he still is clearly the horse to beat in this one-turn mile. (4) Limonite was claimed away from Repole Stable for $40,000 two races back when he finished second. New trainer Amira Chichakly brought him back to win a second-level allowance at Aqueduct by five lengths while racing nine furlongs. (5) Alwaysmining was a five-length winner of an upper level allowance at Laurel Park last time out. We know this now 5-year-old from the Triple Crown series in 2019, but he won two stakes at the Maryland track last year going a mile or longer. This will be his first start at Aqueduct. (2) Musical Heart set the pace in the Jazil and finished third behind Mr. Buff. His early speed will serve him well in this five-horse field.
