No track in North America carries the weight that Saratoga does. They call it the Graveyard of Champions for a reason. Secretariat got beaten here. Gallant Fox got beaten here. Man o' War lost the only race of his life here. For six weeks every summer the best horses in training show up at the Spa, and the place still finds ways to humble them. That is the draw. You never know what you are going to get, and that is exactly why we keep coming back.

The 2026 meet opens Friday, July 3 and runs 46 days through Labor Day, Monday, September 7. That is a longer meet than the traditional 40 days, and there is a reason for it. This is the final summer Saratoga hosts the July 4th Racing Festival. With the new Belmont Park set to reopen in September, the Belmont Derby and Belmont Oaks land at the Spa one last time before everything reverts to the old 40-day calendar in 2027. If you want to see Belmont's marquee turf cards run under Saratoga's elms, this is your last chance.

Twenty Grade 1 races. Seventy-three stakes in total. More than $23.5 million in purses. Here is how the summer breaks down and where the betting heat is going to land.

Opening Weekend Sets the Tone

Saratoga does not ease into things. The first three days throw graded stakes at you immediately, and the July 4th Festival cards are loaded.

Saratoga 2026 thoroughbreds racing down the Saratoga stretch

Opening day, Friday July 3, leads with the Schuylerville for two-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs, a $200,000 pot and an early line on the juvenile filly division. The Wild Applause and the Saranac fill out the turf undercard.

Saturday July 4 is the big one. The Belmont Derby Invitational (G1) and Belmont Oaks Invitational (G1) headline a card that also carries the Suburban (G2) for older dirt horses and the Sanford (G3) for the babies. International turf form matters in the Belmont Derby and Oaks, so do not just bet the domestic names. Sunday closes the festival with the Leo O'Brien (G1) and the Kelso (G3).

See the opening weekend table below for the full three-day breakdown.

Diana Day and the CCA Oaks

The middle of July belongs to the turf fillies and mares. Diana Day on Saturday, July 18 features the Diana Stakes (G1), one of the premier grass races of the entire meet and a reliable Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf pointer. The form lines out of the Diana hold up all autumn.

A week later, Coaching Club American Oaks Day on Saturday, July 25 puts the three-year-old fillies front and center. The CCA Oaks (G1) at a mile and a quarter is a serious test of stamina, and the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) gives the dirt sprinters their say on the same card.

Jim Dandy Day and the Road to the Travers

Saturday, August 1 brings the Jim Dandy (G2), the traditional local prep for the Travers. This is where the leading three-year-olds off the Triple Crown trail get one more start before the Mid-Summer Derby. Pay attention to who runs well here and who skips it straight to the Travers. The Saratoga Special (G2) and Lake George (G3) round out the day.

Whitney Day Is One of the Best Cards in America

Saratoga 2026 opening weekend at Saratoga Race Course

Saturday, August 8 is as good as it gets outside of a Breeders' Cup. The Whitney (G1), now in its 99th edition with a $1 million purse, brings together the best older dirt horses in the country and hands the winner a coveted berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic. Win the Whitney and your fall campaign takes care of itself.

It does not stop there. The Saratoga Derby (G1), Fourstardave (G1) and Test (G1) all run the same afternoon. Four Grade 1 races on one card. There is no soft spot to bet through, which is exactly how Saratoga likes it.

Alabama Day

Saturday, August 22 features the Alabama (G1), the most prestigious race in the country for three-year-old fillies and a roll call of future champions. A mile and a quarter at the Spa sorts out the pretenders fast. This is a race that has launched Hall of Fame careers.

Travers Festival: The Mid-Summer Derby

Saturday, August 29 is the centerpiece of the entire meet and one of the greatest single days of racing anywhere. The Travers (G1), in its 157th renewal with a $1.25 million purse, pulls in the top three-year-olds from the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont trail for the Mid-Summer Derby. If a sophomore has anything left to prove, this is where they prove it.

Travers Day stacks five Grade 1 races into one program. Alongside the big one you get the Personal Ensign (G1), the Forego (G1), the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial (G1) and the Ballerina (G1). Nine stakes in total on the day. Clear your schedule and bring a deep bankroll.

Closing Week

The meet wraps with a six-day closing stretch from Wednesday, September 2 through Labor Day, September 7. The juvenile stakes take over as attention shifts toward the autumn championship picture. The Spinaway (G1) and the Hopeful (G1) over the closing weekend are the first real Breeders' Cup juvenile pointers of the season, so the closing days are not a wind-down. They are a launch pad.
