The Jimmy Winkfield features 3-year-olds at Aqueduct on Saturday

By NY Hot List staff | February 10, 2023

The $100,000, six-furlong Jimmy Winkfield Stakes features six 3-year-olds that will sprint six furlongs. The Jimmy Winkfield is named in honor of the last Black jockey to win the Kentucky Derby. Winkfield, a Hall of Famer, won the Run for the Roses back-to-back with His Eminence in 1901 and with Alan-a-Dale in 1902.

Drew’s Gold, who is undefeated in two starts, is the 2-1 morning line favorite for trainer and co-owner James Chapman who purchased him for $25,000 as a yearling. Drew’s Gold had to recover from starting gate trouble to win both times.

“He always breaks a little slow. He’s still scared of the doors,” Chapman said. “He doesn’t break through them, he watches them a second and gets himself left. But then he gets in the race and does what he does.”

Here are the Hot List picks for the Jimmy Winkfield:

The $100,000 Jimmy Winkfield, Aqueduct, Saturday, Race 3.

(4) Drew’s Gold won both of his races with a debut victory at Churchill Downs in May and then following an eight month layoff he recovered from a troubled start to win an allowance at Laurel Park by almost four lengths. He earned the highest speed figure in Winkfield from that victory. (3) Kool Kathmandu was a five-length winner of a maiden special weight in his second start on a sloppy track and was geared down approaching the wire. He is projected to be on the lead once again. (1) Joey Freshwater won his last two starts beginning with a clear victory in a maiden claimer at Churchill Downs where Linda Rice took him for $50,000. At Aqueduct, Joey Freshwater won a starter allowance with a stalking trip. (2) Daydreaming Boy ships up from Parx after facing very strong competition in a pair of stakes and a maiden race.
