The Mother Goose for 3-year-old fillies is the Saturday feature at Aqueduct

By NY Hot List staff | October 27, 2023

The Grade 2, $250,000 Mother Goose is the feature on Saturday in the Belmont at the Big A meeting. The 1 1/8 mile test for 3-year-old fillies drew a field of seven which includes five stakes winners.

Xigera moved from turf to dirt and won the Seneca Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs for trainer Phil Bauer. In July, she won the Tepin at Ellis Park on the turf.

“She’s always been the right temperament kind of filly to be a real good racehorse,” Bauer said. “She has a sharp edge to her and it transfers over to her races. I tell people she has a short fuse – she’s easy to deal with until that fuse is burnt. She’s doing great and we’re excited.”

Foggy Night ships up from Parx Racing where she won the Cathryn Sophia for trainer Butch Reid in August. In July she was victorious in the Delaware Oaks (G3).

“The further the better with her,” Reid, Jr. said. “She’s already shown that she ships well and handles all the things like that. She’s won at various different racetracks. We’re going in there feeling pretty good about it.”

The $250,000 Mother Goose (G2) at Aqueduct, Saturday, Race 8, 3:48 pm EDT.

(5) Occult was third last time in the Cotillion (G1) on a Parx Racing sloppy track that had plenty of standing water and still managed to rally from last. In her prior race she won the Monmouth Oaks (G3) by more than 10 lengths. Last winter she won twice at Aqueduct including the Busanda. (7) Defining Purpose won the Ashland (G1) at Keeneland and has faced top 3-year-olds subsequently. She also got a victory in the Indiana Oaks (G3) in July. (1) Foggy Night did not appreciate the sloppy conditions in the Cotillion. Before that she won the Cathryn Sophia at Parx and the Delaware Oaks (G3). (6) Xigera is a stakes winner on turf and dirt and took the Seneca at Churchill Downs last month by more than six lengths after four starts on the grass that included a victory in the Tepin at Ellis Park in July.
