War Like Goddess takes on the boys on Saturday at Belmont at the Big A

By NY Hot List staff | October 6, 2022

Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont at the Big A features the sensational 5-year-old mare War Like Goddess as she takes on the boys for the first time in her career.

Hall of Famer Bill Mott trains War Like Goddess who is a winner eight times in 11 career starts including a perfect 4 for 4 record at the 1 ½ mile distance of the Turf Classic. Mott kept the Joe Hirsch as a possibility for the daughter of English Channel as he tries to win this race for the fifth time.

“It’s been an option we’ve had if the race seemed suitable for her. The distance and everything here is suitable,” said Mott. “She seems to be doing very well and I’m pleased with her.”

The $500,000 Turf Classic (G1) – Belmont at Aqueduct, Saturday, Race 8.

(7) Gufo is in the best form of his career with a win in the Sword Dancer (G1) and a nose loss in the Turf Cup at Kentucky Downs. He runs well on turf with some moisture in it. (2) War Like Goddess will take on the boys for the first time in her career with eight wins from 11 starts. If she runs her best race there is no reason that she cannot win against this caliber field of guys. (6) Soldier Rising also appreciates some give in the grass. He rallied from last to finish third just a length behind the winner in the Sword Dancer with the best speed figure of his career. (3) Adhamo was a disappointment in the Sword Dancer after winning the United Nations (G1) at Monmouth Park. He finished ahead of the top choice back in June in the Manhattan (G1).
