Top 5 Travers Stakes Contenders
1. Golden Tempo (Post 9, 5/2)
Golden Tempo is the story of the 3 year old season. The Curlin colt won the Kentucky Derby by rallying from 17 lengths back in last place to beat Renegade by a neck, then backed it up in the Belmont Stakes with another sweeping run from six lengths off the pace to beat Commandment by a length and a quarter. His record now stands at 6 starts, 4 wins, 2 seconds, and $4.6 million banked.
A brief illness in late June cost him the Jim Dandy, but trainer Cherie DeVaux said the layoff barely dented his fitness. He has turned in five published breezes at Saratoga since, including a half mile in 49.66 on August 22, and Jose Ortiz has ridden all four of his starts. DeVaux called him a horse who continues to mature and continues to improve, and twice beating this field already gives him the biggest form edge on paper.
2. Renegade (Post 5, 3/1)
Renegade has finished directly behind Golden Tempo in both Triple Crown meetings, a neck back in the Derby and five and a quarter lengths back in the Belmont. He returned to winner's circle form in the Jim Dandy on August 1, rallying from about a dozen lengths off the pace to run down Commandment by half a length and earn a 98 Beyer. Trainer Todd Pletcher drew a direct comparison to Fierceness, his 2024 Jim Dandy winner who came back four weeks later to take the Travers on similarly short rest.

Tyler Gaffalione replaces Irad Ortiz Jr., who is out with a foot injury, so bettors leaning on Renegade are also betting on a rider picking up the mount cold in a Grade 1. Pletcher reported the colt has trained forward since the Jim Dandy, eating well and standing bright at the front of his stall.
3. Sea Strike (Post 7, 5/1)
Sea Strike carries the fastest recent figure in the field. The Midshipman colt demolished the Curlin Stakes field at Saratoga on August 2 with a 105 Brisnet Speed rating, beating Kentucky Derby fourth place finisher Chief Wallabee by more than eight lengths. He has won 2 of 3 career starts for trainer Chad Brown and has never finished worse than second.
Flavien Prat rides again and figures to keep Sea Strike close to the pace rather than dropping him into a deep closing trip. If he repeats anywhere near that Curlin number around two turns at 10 furlongs, he is fast enough to be first past the wire, and 5/1 looks generous next to Renegade's 3/1 given the figures.
4. Napoleon Solo (Post 3, 8/1)
Napoleon Solo won the Preakness Stakes and followed with a clean second in the Haskell on July 18, giving him arguably the best speed profile of anyone drawn inside Golden Tempo's gate. Trainer Chad Summers has been effusive about his colt's condition at Saratoga, noting three sharp works including a bullet four furlongs in 47.67, and said flatly that missing the Travers would take him out of championship consideration.
The riding change adds intrigue. Hall of Famer John Velazquez takes over from Paco Lopez for the first time aboard the grey colt after working him in the mornings. With the field's most obvious gate speed, Napoleon Solo could get an uncontested lead if nobody else wants it, which would make him a live price at 8/1 in a race that otherwise sets up as a closer's affair.
5. The Puma (Post 4, 8/1)
The Puma was second in the Florida Derby in March before leg swelling forced him out of the Kentucky Derby. He returned after nearly four months on the sidelines to finish fourth in the Haskell on July 18, and connections believe that run has him primed to move forward. He has worked three times over the Saratoga main track, headlined by a six furlong move in 1:14.76 with Javier Castellano up.
Castellano is a seven time Travers winning jockey who has built much of that record on longer priced horses, and trainer Gustavo Delgado said his colt is feeling good and happy heading into Saturday. At 8/1, The Puma is the classic Travers type who does not need to be the best horse on paper to hit the board.
