Pool 1 of the Breeders' Cup Classic Future Wager opens Friday, August 28 at noon Eastern and stays open through Sunday, August 30 at approximately 6:00 PM Eastern. Keeneland runs the wager on behalf of Breeders' Cup, with the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic itself set to close out the two day 2026 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland on October 31.

What the Future Wager Covers
The Breeders' Cup Classic Future Wager is a single win only pool tied to the official first place finisher of the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic on October 31. Breeders' Cup and Keeneland split the year into two separate pools, and each one is calculated and paid out on its own. Pool 1 runs this weekend, August 28 through 30. Pool 2 follows a month later, September 25 through 27. A bet placed in Pool 1 has no bearing on Pool 2 pricing or payouts, so bettors who like a price now do not have to wait for the second window, and those who want to see more of the prep season play out can hold off.

How the 24 Betting Interests Work
Each pool is built around 23 individually named betting interests, selected by the Breeders' Cup committee and listed alphabetically, not by post position or morning line. A 24th interest, the mutuel field, absorbs every other Classic bound horse that did not get its own line. If fewer than 23 horses are named in a given pool, the last interest listed becomes the mutuel field instead. The minimum bet is 2 dollars and every bet is win only, meaning your interest has to finish first for a payout. Once you walk away from the window, the bet is final. There are no refunds for scratches, injuries or a horse that fails to start, with one exception: if Keeneland and Breeders' Cup determine before or during the pool that a horse cannot run, that betting interest is suspended from further sale, though anyone who already bet it does not get their money back.
Early Favorites in the Pool
Breeders' Cup set the opening line for Pool 1 with reigning Horse of the Year Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, on top at 4 to 1, followed by defending Classic winner Forever Young, trained by Yoshito Yahagi, at 5 to 1 and Knightsbridge, another Bill Mott trainee off a Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes win, at 6 to 1. Behind that trio, Magnitude (Steve Asmussen) heads the second tier at 10 to 1, with Golden Tempo (Cherie DeVaux) and Renegade (Todd Pletcher) both at 12 to 1 and Baeza (Bill Mott) at 15 to 1. Nitrogen (Mark Casse) rounds out the group getting the most respect on the board at 20 to 1.

Refunds, Scratches and Other Pool Rules
Payoffs are calculated under Kentucky racing law as a single price pool. The amount bet on the winning interest comes out of the net pool first, and what is left is divided among winning tickets. If nobody bet the actual winner, the pool falls back to whoever bet second, then third, and if none of those three interests drew a single bet the entire pool is refunded. A dead heat involving two horses running as the same betting interest pays as though no dead heat happened. A dead heat between two separate betting interests splits the profit between them. If the 2026 Breeders' Cup does not run or fails to produce an official winner, every bet across both pools is refunded in full.
