Future Stars Friday at Keeneland

Five juvenile championships worth $7 million run on Friday, October 30. The first Breeders’ Cup race of the day is the Juvenile Turf Sprint at 2:55pm ET, and the Juvenile Turf closes out the Breeders’ Cup action at 5:35pm ET. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies both go 1 1/16 miles on dirt for $2 million each. The other three run on the grass for $1 million apiece. Our Future Stars Friday guide covers all five races in depth.

Championship Saturday at Keeneland

Saturday’s nine races carry $23 million between them. The Dirt Mile kicks off the Breeders’ Cup races at 1:10pm ET. From there the card builds through the Sprint, the Mile and the Distaff before the two richest races on the program. The Turf runs 1 1/2 miles on the grass for $5 million at 5:36pm ET. The Classic follows at 6:16pm ET over 1 1/4 miles on dirt for $7 million. Our Championship Saturday guide breaks down all nine.

How the Breeders’ Cup Works

The Breeders’ Cup splits its 14 championships by age, sex, surface and distance. Distances run from 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf to 1 1/2 miles in the Turf, so sprinters, milers and stayers all get a championship of their own. Every race carries Grade 1 status.

Nominations and the Breeders’ Cup Challenge

A horse has to carry a Breeders’ Cup nomination to run. Breeders nominate foals for $400 before October 15 of their foaling year. Owners of horses that missed that window can still supplement them later for a fee.

The fastest route into the gate is the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, better known as Win and You’re In. Qualifying races in 14 countries hand their winners a guaranteed starting spot and free entry fees, provided the horse holds a nomination by the pre entry deadline. That deadline passed at noon ET on Monday, October 19.

Field Sizes and Travel Awards

Most Breeders’ Cup races take a maximum of 14 starters. The Juvenile Turf Sprint and Dirt Mile cap at 12. Breeders’ Cup pays a $40,000 travel award to starters based outside North America and $10,000 to North American starters stabled outside Kentucky, which helps explain the strong European and Japanese presence every year. You can find the full conditions on the official Breeders’ Cup website.

A Short History of the Breeders’ Cup

A group of Kentucky breeders led by John Gaines conceived the Breeders’ Cup in 1982 as a season ending championship for the sport. The first edition ran in November 1984 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, with seven races in front of more than 64,000 fans. The program has since doubled to 14 races over two days. Santa Anita has hosted 11 times, more than any other track, and Churchill Downs has hosted nine.

Breeders’ Cup 2026 marks Keeneland’s fourth turn as host, and every previous visit delivered a moment. In 2015 American Pharoah won the Classic to complete the first Grand Slam, adding the Breeders’ Cup to his Triple Crown. In 2020 Keeneland ran the event without spectators, and Authentic took the Classic. In 2022 Flightline won the Classic by a record 8 1/4 lengths to close an unbeaten career, and bettors pushed the two day handle to a record $189 million. Keeneland itself turned 90 this month. The track opened on October 15, 1936.
