Glorious Goodwood 2026 Day 1: Morning Lines, News, Tips and Insights

Glorious Goodwood kicks off today, Tuesday, July 28, at Goodwood Racecourse in West Sussex, England, and Goodwood Cup Day sets the tone for five afternoons of top-level turf racing on the Sussex Downs. The card runs eight races, with the first off at 8:50 a.m. ET and the Group 1 Goodwood Cup taking center stage at 10:35 a.m. ET. ITV Racing carries the first five races live in the UK, while the full card streams for US bettors through the MyWinners platform.

This is the biggest staying test of the European summer, and it opens with a genuine grudge match at the top of the card. Below we break down the Goodwood Cup and Lennox Stakes fields, dig into the American bloodlines running through today's feature, and lay out our morning line tips for Day 1.

Glorious Goodwood Day 1 at a Glance

Today's eight-race card at Glorious Goodwood runs from 8:50 a.m. ET through the afternoon, with the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup as the 10:35 a.m. ET feature and the Group 2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes just ahead of it at 10:00 a.m. ET. The going is good, the forecast is sunny, and both feature races have drawn tight, competitive fields rather than the usual festival cavalry charges. Wednesday brings the £1.5 million Sussex Stakes, Thursday the Nassau Stakes, and Saturday closes the meet with the 28-runner Stewards' Cup.

World Pool Runs Through Today's Card

Today is a World Pool day at Goodwood, and it's right there in the name of the feature: the HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes. World Pool merges wagering liquidity from bettors around the globe into a single co-mingled pool for selected races, which means deeper pools and tighter odds on exotic bets than you'd typically see on an average UK card.

Four of the five days at this year's festival run through World Pool, from today's Goodwood Cup Day through Friday's King George Qatar Stakes card. Only Saturday's Stewards' Cup sits outside the pool. If you like betting exotics, today and the next three days are the ones to target.

Goodwood Cup Odds and Preview: Scandinavia vs Trawlerman, Round Two

Eight go to post in the two-mile Goodwood Cup, and the whole race is built around a rematch. Scandinavia and Trawlerman produced one of the finest finishes of the European season in last month's Ascot Gold Cup, with Aidan O'Brien's colt getting up by a head. Scandinavia is the 10/11 favorite this time, unbeaten in six starts, with the John and Thady Gosden-trained Trawlerman next best at 5/2 as he bids to add the Goodwood Cup to a resume that already includes a 2022 course win.

Rahiebb, who chased Scandinavia home in last year's St Leger before finding two and a half miles too far at Ascot, drops back in trip and sits at 12/1 for Roger Varian. Illinois, the O'Brien second string and last year's Goodwood Cup runner-up, is out to 28/1 after a flat run in the Curragh Cup nine days ago. Ralph Beckett's Amiloc, the Charlie Johnston-trained Lazy Griff, John and Thady Gosden's second string French Master, and Ed Walker's Miss Alpilles round out the field.

The American Angle: Justify's Son Leads the Cup Field

No US-based trainer has a runner declared on Day 1 at Goodwood this year, but the pedigree page tells a different story. Scandinavia, the horse everyone else in the Goodwood Cup has to beat, is a son of Justify, the undefeated 2018 US Triple Crown winner who now stands at Ashford Stud in Kentucky. It is Justify's blood, not a shipped-in American runner, doing the damage at the top of today's card.

American connections to this meeting run deeper than one sire line. Wesley Ward, the trailblazing US trainer who has won a dozen races at Royal Ascot, has run at Goodwood before, sending Maven, a son of another US Triple Crown winner in American Pharoah, out for the 2019 Molecomb Stakes. Goodwood's own management has said openly that a handful of US-based trainers are weighing whether to send runners to the meeting, and the track has floated travel allowances to make the trip more appealing. For now that interest hasn't translated into declared runners this week, but it is a storyline worth watching as the festival grows.

The clearest US tie-in for bettors comes later in the week rather than today. Wednesday's Sussex Stakes is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Win and You're In race for the Breeders' Cup Mile, Thursday's Nassau Stakes sends its winner to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf, and Friday's Molecomb Stakes carries a berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Anything that fires at Goodwood this week is worth filing away for Breeders' Cup futures betting in the fall.

Lennox Stakes Preview: Qirat Back at the Scene of Last Year's Shock

Eight runners line up for the Group 2 Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs, and the storyline belongs to Qirat. The Juddmonte-owned colt was a 150/1 shock winner of last year's Sussex Stakes and returns to Goodwood unbeaten in three career starts, stepping back in trip to take on this field.

William Haggas sends out Lake Forest as the market pick after a Listed win on his reappearance and a fifth-place finish in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Witness Stand, trained by Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, defends the crown he won here twelve months ago, while Andrew Balding's Marvelman arrives off a runner-up effort in the Chipchase Stakes. James Owen's Rogue Diplomat, fresh off a Royal Hunt Cup win, joins Holguin, Poet Master and Lord Britain to complete the field.

Betting Tips for Goodwood Cup Day

Scandinavia is fully deserving of favoritism after backing up his Gold Cup win with three straight victories this season, and there's no reason to think two miles at Goodwood changes the picture. He's the play on top in the Goodwood Cup, with Trawlerman the obvious danger given his own course-and-distance win here in 2022. Rahiebb makes the most each-way sense of the rest at 12/1, dropping back from two and a half miles into a trip that should suit him better than it did at Ascot.

In the Lennox, Qirat's unbeaten record and course form make him hard to leave out, even without the shock price tag from twelve months ago. Lake Forest is the alternative if you want a horse fresh off a Royal Ascot placing rather than one carrying the weight of a repeat bid.

Cash Back If Your Horse Finishes 2nd Or 3rd

Place a straight win bet on the Lennox Stakes, Golden Mile, Richmond Stakes, King George Qatar Stakes, at Glorious Goodwood and you'll get up to $5 cash back if your horse runs second or third. It applies to your first straight win bet on each of those races, no opt in required, and the cash back lands in your account within 24 hours.
