Saratoga's second big Saturday of the summer meet lands on August 1, and it's a loaded one. Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) — the headline
The $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun goes as the 10th race on Saturday's card, first post 12:30pm with the Jim Dandy itself set for around 5:44pm ET, live on FOX. It's run at 1 1/8 miles on the main track and serves as Saratoga's primary prep for the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (G1) on August 29.

Five go to post, and it's a genuinely compact, high-class group. Grade 1 winners Commandment and Renegade will meet for the third straight time, both exiting the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga on June 6, where they finished second and third behind Golden Tempo (who's bypassing this race and training up to the Travers).
Renegade (post 3, Irad Ortiz Jr., trained by Todd Pletcher for Robert and Lawana Low and Repole Stable) won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby by four lengths this spring, then ran second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont. He's a confirmed late runner who sits back off the pace, and his final work before the Jim Dandy — four furlongs in :49.50 over the main track — had Pletcher satisfied with where he's at.
Commandment (post 5, Flavien Prat, trained by Brad Cox for Wathnan Racing) won the Grade 1 Florida Derby and has been the model of consistency across seven career starts, including a four-race win streak from November through March. He ran a troubled seventh in the Kentucky Derby before bouncing back for second in the Belmont — a horse who arguably hasn't had a truly clean shot yet this year.
Chip Honcho (post 1, Jose Ortiz, trained by Steve Asmussen) is the wildcard and the only obvious speed in the field. He won the Grade 3 Ohio Derby last out with a rally from fourth, but he's shown he can also go gate-to-wire — he led all the way in a maiden win and set the pace in the Grade 2 Risen Star before finishing a close second. With Renegade, Commandment and Silent Tactic all guaranteed to sit off the pace, Chip Honcho could get an uncontested lead, and that's the single biggest swing factor in how this plays out.
Silent Tactic (post 4, Luis Saez, trained by Mark Casse for John C. Oxley) was runner-up to Renegade in the Arkansas Derby and has been freshened since. Asked and Answered (post 2, Jaime Rodriguez, trained by Antonio Arriaga) is the maiden of the group and the longest price on paper.
The betting angle: with four of the five confirmed as stalkers or closers, an unpressured lead for Chip Honcho is the live upset scenario. If the pace does collapse late, that plays into Renegade's hands as the horse who's already proven he handles this level. Commandment is the wildcard for anyone who thinks he's due a clean trip. Saratoga Special Stakes (G2)
The $250,000 Saratoga Special is the two-year-old feature of the day, run at 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track with a post time around 1:11pm. It's traditionally one of the meet's better early markers for which juveniles are pointing toward the fall two-year-old stakes season, and it draws from the same crop that will contest the Hopeful and the Champagne later in the year. Lake George Stakes (G3)
The $225,000 Lake George is run for three-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon turf course. It sits in the same lane as the Saratoga Oaks and Lake Placid on the summer turf schedule for the division, and it typically draws a mix of graded stakes winners and horses stepping up in class off allowance form. With three-year-old filly turf form still sorting itself out at this point in the season, it's a good spot to find value against a shorter-priced favorite.

Jim Dandy Day is essentially a three-tier card: a marquee three-year-old dirt test with real Travers implications, a two-year-old prospect race, and a filly turf feature.
