The Meadowlands runs its biggest afternoon of the year, Thistledown hands out $500,000 across five Ohio-bred stakes, and Ascot turns into horse racing's version of an all-star game. The Hambletonian Final Comes Down to Apex vs Big Ranger
The 101st Hambletonian, $1 million and the first leg of harness racing's trotting Triple Crown, goes as the co-feature on a 16-race card that starts at noon Eastern. The final field is set after last Saturday's eliminations at the Big M, and it split cleanly into two camps built around a pair of horses who won their heats in contrasting styles.
Apex, the reigning Dan Patch Award winner for 3-year-old trotters, got parked wide for most of his elimination and still ground down Endurance by a nose in 1:50.4, holding off a serious grandstand-side threat in the final strides. Dexter Dunn, who drove him, said afterward that the trip toughened the horse up and expects him sharper for it a week later. Apex heads into the final unbeaten in three of four starts this year with career earnings past $1.5 million.
Big Ranger took the more conventional route to his spot, sitting a covered trip before clearing to the lead and holding off a first-over challenge from Nix Nacken to win his heat in a lifetime-best 1:50. Driver Tim Tetrick came away raving about the colt's composure, and it's easy to see why: Big Ranger has now won nine of his first 11 career starts for trainer Anette Lorentzon and enters off a four-race win streak.
Both elimination winners get post priority between 1 and 6 for the final, with the actual post draw held earlier this week. Endurance, American Power, Captain Naughty and AI round out the group that came through Apex's heat, while It Could Be Worse, Magic Punk, Spencer Hanover and Minoan advanced behind Big Ranger. That's a 10-horse final with two clear top choices and a genuinely deep supporting cast behind them.

The Hambletonian Oaks Final Is Just as Stacked
The $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks final runs the same afternoon, and its three eliminations produced one of the more entertaining undercards of the meet. Carve took the first heat by a length and a half after slicing through a seam at the rail in the stretch. Busy Miss Lissy S pulled the mild upset of the day in the second elimination, holding off 1-5 favorite Nezuko Kamado S by a neck in a lifetime-best mile, with Storybook Love grabbing the last spot in the final on the strength of her fourth-place finish and career earnings. Setyoursightshigh made it a clean sweep of favorites-beaten-or-not by cutting the fractions and going gate to wire in the third elimination.
Add it up and the final field mixes Carve, Busy Miss Lissy S and Setyoursightshigh as the three elimination winners against Nezuko Kamado S, this season's fastest sophomore trotting filly on a mark of 1:50 1/5, who now has a beaten favorite chip on her shoulder heading into the final.

Best of Ohio Day Spreads $500,000 Across Five Stakes at Thistledown
While the big money grabs headlines at the Meadowlands, Thistledown runs its own showcase card the same day. Best of Ohio Day is one of three state-bred stakes programs Ohio racing puts on each year, alongside Belterra in June and Mahoning Valley in October, and Thistledown's slice of it is five stakes worth $100,000 apiece, exclusively for Ohio-breds. The Governor's Buckeye Cup and Pay the Man cover older horses going long, the Honey Jay is the sprint equivalent, and the Cleveland Kindergarten and Miss Ohio give 2-year-old colts and fillies their turn in the spotlight.
It's a card with a habit of throwing up long shots. The last time we checked in on a full Best of Ohio program, none of the five stakes went to the betting favorite. If you like a square price with your handle, this is normally a good day to find one.
Ascot's Shergar Cup Turns Into a Genuine Jockey Draft
Across the Atlantic, the 25th Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup runs its usual six-race team format at Ascot, and this year's edition comes with two firsts: it's the first Shergar Cup run under the World Pool banner, and the first with a Hong Kong Jockey Club team in the field alongside the regulars from Great Britain & Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World.
Great Britain & Ireland is the one to watch on paper. Captain Saffie Osborne is joined by Ryan Moore, making just his second Shergar Cup appearance since winning the Silver Saddle on his 2006 debut, and Dylan Browne McMonagle, fresh off a four-winner week at Glorious Goodwood that included Oaks victories at both Epsom and the Curragh. Christophe Lemaire captains Team Europe alongside Marie Velon and Frida Valle Skar, Vincent Ho leads the first-ever Hong Kong side with Jerry Chau and Luke Ferraris, and Jamie Melham captains the Rest of the World team with Yutaka Take and Suraj Narredu alongside her.
Points run 15 for a win down to three for fifth across the six races, with the Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle going to the jockey with the most individual points on the day. Coral makes Great Britain & Ireland the 2/5 favorite to win the team title, with Ryan Moore heading the Silver Saddle market at 7/4 despite his 20 year layoff from the event. With a full World Pool card behind it for the first time, this is as good a betting product as the Shergar Cup has offered.

Whitney Day Adds Saratoga's Marquee Card to the Mix
Saturday also happens to be Whitney Day at Saratoga, where the 99th running of the $1 million Whitney Stakes headlines four Grade 1 races on a card that runs from an 11:45 am first post into the evening. Del Mar Layers On the Yellow Ribbon and Best Pal
Del Mar joins the pile up too, staging its first Turf and Surf Festival behind the $200,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes for turf fillies and mares and the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes, the meet's first open company juvenile test of the year. First post out west is 2 pm Pacific, so the card runs well into the evening alongside everything happening on the East Coast.

In the Oaks, Nezuko Kamado S getting beat as the 1-5 favorite is more interesting than it looks. That's a filly with the fastest sophomore mark in the country losing a straight fight, and fillies that talented rarely stay beaten twice.
At Ascot, Ryan Moore's return to the Shergar Cup after two decades away is the story, but Dylan Browne McMonagle arrives in the sort of form that tends to translate well to a five-ride afternoon. Watch for Great Britain & Ireland to be the team to beat.
