Our World Cup watch party in Stamford ran for five weeks. It started with the USMNT opener against Paraguay on June 12 and finished on Sunday, July 19, when Ferran Torres scored in extra time to give Spain a 1 to 0 win over Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
Bobby V’s Stamford was our home base for the whole tournament, and the final was played just across the state line in New Jersey. Here’s how the summer went, from the USMNT’s run to Lionel Messi’s last stand.
The Final: Spain Beat Argentina After Extra Time
Spain controlled the final from the start and took the game’s first 20 shots, according to the Boston Globe. Argentina held on, and it was still 0 to 0 after 90 minutes.

Substitute Ferran Torres settled it in the 106th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and lifting a left foot shot under the crossbar. Unai Simón kept the clean sheet and took the Golden Glove, and Messi’s last World Cup ended one game short.
Watching the USMNT Run From Stamford
The USMNT gave Stamford plenty to shout about early. Mauricio Pochettino’s side beat Paraguay and Australia on the way to winning Group D, then beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2 to 0 in the round of 32.
Belgium ended it in the round of 16 with a 4 to 1 win, and Malik Tillman’s free kick was the only American goal. Our World Cup 2026 in Connecticut preview picked out the games that mattered most to local fans.
