Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026: Field, Odds and Prediction

Breeders' Cup Juvenile 2026 favorite Hughes winning the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita

Hughes is unbeaten in four starts, has already won two Grade 1 races and heads the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026 market at 5/4 for Bob Baffert. But on Friday he runs outside Southern California for the first time. Waiting for him, too, is a colt who has already won over this exact track and trip.

That colt is Todd Pletcher’s American History, and he is the reason this is more than a coronation. So below you’ll find the full field, the ante-post prices and our bets for the $2 million race at Keeneland.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026 Post Time, Distance and Purse

The FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) goes off at 4:55pm ET on Friday, October 30, as Race 9 on Keeneland’s card. It’s the fourth of the five Future Stars Friday races, and it runs over 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for a $2 million purse.

Eight colts remain after Net Par came out. Champagne winner U.S.S. Valor won’t run either, because owner Barry Irwin wants to freshen him for a Kentucky Derby campaign. As a result, Gaudreau and Earth Song carry the Champagne form.

Hughes Is the Unbeaten Favorite

Hughes started with a five furlong win at Los Alamitos in July. After that he took the Grade 3 Best Pal at Del Mar, then stretched out to seven furlongs to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on September 6.

His last start answered the distance question, too. On October 3 he won the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita by six lengths, over the same 1 1/16 miles he meets on Friday. In fact, he paid just $2.60 to win.

Baffert called that race good schooling, because the colt sat behind horses and still quickened clear. So he doesn’t need everything his own way. The ship east is the only open question, though Baffert has won this race six times.

American History Has the Course and Distance Win

American History is two for two for Pletcher and his owners, WinStar Farm, First Go Racing and China Horse Club. He won on debut at Saratoga, then came from off the pace to take the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity here on October 3.

That race went 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland, so he has already won over Friday’s track and trip. Also, he went off at 5/1 that day and still beat the odds-on Coach Pope by a length under John Velazquez, who keeps the ride.

Since then he has breezed a half-mile in 47 seconds at Keeneland, the fastest of 30 works at that distance on October 14. In short, he’s sharp and on home ground. Pletcher also won this race last year with Ted Noffey.

Coach Pope Is the Exotics Play

Kenny McPeek’s Coach Pope takes his name from Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope. He ran second on debut at Saratoga, then won a one mile maiden at Churchill Downs by 12 1/2 lengths on September 12.

In the Breeders’ Futurity he was the favorite, but only American History got past him. Jose Ortiz rides again, too. At 4/1 he’s too short to back for the win, though he belongs on every exotic ticket.

Salahudin, Gaudreau and the Rest of the Juvenile Field

Baffert also runs Salahudin, who is three for three for Zedan Racing. In the Grade 3 Iroquois at Churchill Downs on September 12 he broke slowly, trailed early and still beat He Is No Lie by half a length as the 4/5 favorite. A start like that won’t beat Hughes, though the late run suits this trip.

Meanwhile, Chad Brown’s Gaudreau has the most interesting form line. He won his Saratoga debut on August 8 by half a length, while Coach Pope ran second and U.S.S. Valor third. Then he ran second to U.S.S. Valor in the Grade 1 Champagne, but Friday is his first try around two turns.

Elsewhere, Pletcher’s Damavand won a 1 1/16 mile maiden at Keeneland on October 4. He Is No Lie has run second in two stakes for Doug O’Neill, so he is consistent but short of this class. Finally, Earth Song finished fourth in the Champagne after getting bumped near the quarter pole.

Our Breeders’ Cup Juvenile 2026 Prediction

Hughes is our pick, because he has the class, he has won at the trip and he has won all four of his starts. At 5/4 he is short, but we won’t try to beat him.

Instead, the bet is finding the second. American History has the course form, so he goes second on our tickets, while Coach Pope is the main alternative.

Our bets: Hughes to win, plus a $1 exacta of Hughes over American History and Coach Pope, which is two combinations for $2. Then, for a bigger payout, we play a $1 trifecta with Hughes on top, American History and Coach Pope second, and American History, Coach Pope, Salahudin and Gaudreau third. Overall, that’s six combinations for $6.
